The fantasy film studio platform Mogul, developed by MoviePass, has officially transitioned from its private testing phase and is now accessible to the general public. This innovative platform invites participants to step into the shoes of a Hollywood mogul, managing their own virtual studio by drafting a lineup of actors, directors, and upcoming films. Drawing clear inspiration from daily fantasy sports, the game challenges players to build a winning team that accumulates points based on the real-world box office and critical performance of their selections.
Previously available to a select group, the web version of Mogul is now open to everyone, including the more than 400,000 individuals who had joined its waiting list. During the pre-season testing period, which involved around 5,000 users, the core mechanics proved to be surprisingly intuitive, even for those unfamiliar with fantasy sports. The gameplay is structured to be easy to grasp while offering strategic depth.
Getting started is a straightforward process. After creating a unique name for your studio, you are allocated a starting budget of one million “Mogul Coin,” the platform’s dedicated virtual currency. This initial capital is used to acquire the talent and projects for your roster. For instance, the sequel “Wicked: For Good” might carry a price tag of $100,000, while lead actresses Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande could each be valued at $25,000, as could director Jon M. Chu. Players have a full week to lock in their initial team and are permitted two free swaps each subsequent week to adjust their lineup.
According to MoviePass founder Stacy Spikes, the primary goal was to design a game that authentically simulates the experience of running a film studio, requiring you to “act like a mogul.” This means your weekly roster changes must be made with careful consideration, much like a real studio executive would. For example, if an actor on your team, such as Jared Leto from “Tron: Ares,” becomes embroiled in a public scandal, you must weigh the potential impact on that film’s performance and your overall score.
Spikes offered several strategic insights for prospective moguls. He emphasized the value of identifying rising stars before they become mainstream, as their lower initial cost can lead to substantial point returns. He also suggested looking beyond typical Hollywood blockbusters, noting that Bollywood productions and independent films are often undervalued and can yield impressive profitability. A crucial element of the scoring system is that it is based on a project’s net profitability, not its total gross revenue. Furthermore, the timing of your investments is critical; securing a movie early in its development is usually cheaper, while picking it up near its release date often comes at a premium.
The entire Mogul ecosystem is built on the Sui blockchain, a layer 1 network that permanently records every transaction, trade, and team selection. As participants compete and climb the global leaderboard, they have opportunities to earn digital collectibles, which can include items like signed digital posters and other memorabilia. For this inaugural public season, which aligns with the awards season and runs for 12 weeks through October, November, and December, users can compete for a share of a prize pool valued at up to $100,000 in tokens. To incentivize early adoption, MoviePass is awarding exclusive in-app badges and Founding Member status to all users who activate their accounts before the end of October 31.
Looking ahead, the company is actively developing features for private leagues where friends can compete against one another, alongside dedicated mobile applications for iOS and Android. Spikes has also indicated that by next year, the platform may secure a licensing agreement that would allow participants to play for real money, taking the competitive stakes to a new level.
