Mazda’s Rotary Hybrid Concept Debuts in Tokyo

This week’s Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo serves as the stage for Mazda to unveil two forward-thinking concept vehicles, both built around the compelling idea that the joy of driving can power a sustainable future. One of these, the Vision X-Coupe, represents the next step in the evolution of the brand’s KODO design philosophy, a styling direction first introduced at this very event ten years ago.

While renderings of the Vision X-Coupe show a clear visual connection to current Mazda models like the 3 hatchback and CX-30 crossover, its form is reinterpreted through the sleek, elongated silhouette of a four-door coupe. The design, however, takes a back seat to the innovative sustainability technologies Mazda is showcasing with this concept.

The heart of the Vision X-Coupe is a high-performance plug-in hybrid powertrain. It generates a substantial 503 horsepower (375 kW) and uniquely employs a two-rotor turbocharged rotary engine to act as the internal combustion component. Mazda projects this setup will deliver an impressive total range of 500 miles (800 km), with the capability to travel 100 miles (160 km) solely on its battery power.

Operating this concept car is designed to be an environmentally conscious experience. Mazda’s President and CEO, Masahiro Moro, outlined a future where driving more can actively help reduce atmospheric CO2. He pointed to two key technologies to make this a reality: the use of carbon-neutral fuel refined from microalgae and the development of systems that capture CO2 directly from the vehicle itself. This vision aims to reconcile high-performance driving with genuine ecological responsibility.
