Boox’s New Smartphone-Sized E-Readers: Premium Price Revealed

▼ Summary

– The new Boox P6 Pro and P6 Pro Color e-readers have been released in China and are expected to be more expensive globally due to 2025 price increases.
– Both models include 128GB of expandable storage, a 16MP camera, a 3,950mAh battery, and run a customized version of Android 13, with the P6 Pro Color having 8GB of RAM and stylus support.
– These are Boox’s first compact e-readers to include a SIM card slot for 5G mobile data access, marking a significant upgrade.
– Unlike some competitors, the P6 Pro models lack calling capabilities and are not designed as smartphone replacements, making their higher price less justifiable.

The latest pocket-sized e-readers from Boox, the P6 Pro and P6 Pro Color, have now launched in China, revealing a notable price increase for the premium devices. With global availability still uncertain, the new models reflect a trend toward higher costs in the tech market for 2025. Both versions are positioned as high-end gadgets, offering advanced E Ink displays and substantial internal upgrades, but their pricing may give potential buyers pause.

The Boox P6 Pro is listed at 2,799 Chinese yuan, approximately $393, and comes with a 6.13-inch monochrome Carta 1300 E Ink screen, an improvement over the display used in the $300 Palma 2. Meanwhile, the P6 Pro Color model carries a price tag of 3,299 CNY, or about $463, featuring a 6.13-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 color display comparable to those found in Kobo’s color e-reader lineup. Launch discounts currently reduce these to 2,516 CNY ($353) for the P6 Pro and 2,991 CNY ($420) for the Color version, though U.S. import tariffs could drive final prices even higher if the devices see an international release.

Under the hood, both e-readers include 128GB of built-in storage, expandable up to 2TB via microSD, along with a 16-megapixel camera and a 3,950mAh battery. They operate on a customized version of Android 13 developed by Boox. The P6 Pro Color steps up with 8GB of RAM instead of 6GB and adds stylus compatibility for handwritten notes. A major selling point is the inclusion of a SIM card slot enabling 5G mobile data connectivity, marking the first time Boox has incorporated this feature in its compact e-readers.

However, unlike the Bigme Hibreak Pro released earlier this year, the P6 Pro series does not support voice calls, positioning them as data-capable e-readers rather than full smartphone substitutes. This distinction makes the price increase a significant consideration for consumers debating whether the premium features justify the cost.
