Google now labels AI-generated ads

▼ Summary
– Google’s “My Ad Center” now has a new section that labels ads on Search, Discover, and YouTube as “created or edited with AI.”
– Users can find the label by tapping the three dots or info button on an ad, in the same panel where they block or report ads.
– Google automatically applies the AI label to ads made with its own generative AI tools, but advertisers using other AI tools must manually add the label.
– In some regions, the AI label may appear directly on the ad, either automatically or when an advertiser manually discloses AI use.
– Meta has a similar “AI info” label, and Google previously introduced AI disclosures for political ads and expanded tools to spot deepfakes.
Starting today, users across Google Search, Google Discover, and YouTube will see a new marker on advertisements: a label reading “created or edited with AI.” This update, introduced through Google’s My Ad Center, adds transparency to how ads are produced. By tapping the three dots or info button on any ad, you can open the same panel used to block or report content, where a new section under “how this ad was made” now appears.
Google will automatically attach the AI label to any ad generated using its own suite of generative AI advertising tools. For ads created with third-party AI tools, advertisers must manually apply the label. In certain regions, the label may also appear directly on the ad itself , either automatically or when an advertiser voluntarily discloses AI involvement.
This move follows a similar approach by Meta, which already includes an “AI info” label within its “About this ad” panel. Google has also required disclosures for “synthetic or digitally altered content” in political ads since 2024. Earlier this year, the company expanded access to SynthID and C2PA content labels, technologies designed to help identify deepfakes and other manipulated media.
