Productivity platform Notion is pulling the plug on Notion Mail, with the service set to shut down on September 22. The decision reflects a strategic pivot toward its AI agent capabilities, as the company observed a growing trend of users bypassing their inboxes entirely.
“As Notion agents have gotten more capable, we’ve seen more users hand off email workflows to them. Today, more than half of Notion Mail users manage emails without ever opening their inbox. So, we’re going all in on using agents to run your inbox,” the company announced on X.
Because Notion Mail is integrated with Gmail, all existing emails will remain safe and accessible. However, users who wish to preserve drafts and scheduled messages must export them before the deadline. The company also confirmed that snippets and auto-labeling rules can be exported for use elsewhere, and emphasized that Notion’s email-focused agents will continue functioning after the shutdown.
Notion first previewed its email product in 2024, following its acquisition of Skiff, a startup focused on security-centric productivity tools. The goal was to merge email with Notion AI, offering features like automated labeling, filtering, and scheduling to streamline user workflows. By April 2025, the product was opened to all users in an effort to challenge competitors such as Superhuman and Fyxer.
Notion’s shift aligns with a broader industry trend. Newer startups like AgentMail are building email services designed specifically for AI agents, mirroring the thesis that the future of email management lies in hands-off automation rather than manual inbox oversight.
