– A Reddit user purchased a Google Home Speaker early from Walmart, before its official release.
– The speaker has a permanently attached USB-C power cable, which the user criticized as a repairability issue.
– Despite the cable, the user praised the speaker’s sound quality, noting good midrange and bass for its size.
– Setup took less than 10 minutes using an existing Google Home account, and touch controls are hidden under the fabric mesh.
– The user observed that the fabric mesh feels loose compared to the hard body, raising durability concerns.

A Reddit user claims to have purchased Google’s upcoming Home Speaker from a Walmart store before its official release, and their early unboxing has already sparked debate over a key hardware design choice. While the speaker’s sound quality and setup process earn praise, the permanently attached power cable has emerged as a major point of contention.

The shopper, who says they found the device on a Walmart shelf during a work trip, reports that a store associate sold it to them even though it was not yet scheduled for release. Their subsequent unboxing video and hands-on impressions reveal that the speaker comes with a non-removable USB-C cable roughly five feet long, which then connects to a detachable 30W power brick. This means the cable attached to the speaker cannot be unplugged or swapped out easily, even though the adapter itself is replaceable.

“Unfortunately, the biggest thing that stood out to me was the irremovable power cable,” the Redditor wrote, calling it a “nightmare for repairability.” The unboxing video confirms that there is no standard USB-C port on the speaker itself. While the cable might be replaceable internally during repairs, the design is far less consumer-friendly than a detachable alternative.

Beyond that disappointment, the early audio impressions are largely positive. The user, who claims experience with professional audio equipment, describes the sound quality as better than expected, with strong midrange and low-frequency performance for a speaker of this size. They did note a preference for slightly boosting the treble in the audio settings. The speaker reportedly gets fairly loud and delivers enough quality that the buyer plans to use it as the main speaker in their living room.

On the hardware side, the user highlights Google’s touch controls, which use hidden lights beneath the fabric mesh to indicate volume levels. Setup was straightforward, taking less than 10 minutes using an existing Google Home account. However, not everything impressed them. In addition to the attached cable, the fabric mesh covering felt somewhat loose compared to the hard body underneath. This could be a defect in that single unit, but it raises questions about long-term durability and potential tearing.

These are still just first impressions from one early owner. More hands-on testing will be needed to fully evaluate the Google Home Speaker.
