Amazon’s Prime Day sales are live this week, and two ultra-compact e-readers from Xteink are seeing notable discounts. The Xteink X4 and the smaller Xteink X3 are both 20% off, dropping to $55.20 (from $69) and $63.20 (from $79), respectively. These devices stand out because they are far more pocketable than any current Kindle or Kobo model. A key feature is their magnetic mount, which lets you attach them directly to the back of any MagSafe-compatible smartphone.

While the factory software can feel a bit clunky, both models sold on Amazon can be easily upgraded to the free CrossPoint Reader firmware. This alternative operating system offers a much smoother and more polished user interface, addressing one of the main criticisms of the out-of-box experience.

In our hands-on testing of the X4, we appreciated its physical page-turn buttons, which make reading more tactile. However, navigating the native software using only these buttons (instead of a touchscreen) can be frustrating. On the plus side, battery life is excellent, and the device supports multiple methods for loading books and documents. Just be aware that, unlike Kindles or Kobos, there is no integrated online bookstore.

The X3 offers similar core functionality but in an even smaller chassis. It features an improved button layout and broader compatibility with smaller smartphones that have magnetic mounts. It is even easier to slip into a tight pocket. However, the X3 relies on a proprietary magnetic USB charging cable, which could be a significant drawback for anyone who frequently misplaces charging cords.
