French AI startup Mistral AI is reportedly in early-stage talks to secure approximately €3 billion ($3.5 billion) in new funding, according to a Friday report from Bloomberg, which cited unnamed sources familiar with the matter. The potential round would place the company’s valuation at roughly €20 billion (about $23.15 billion) , nearly double the €11.7 billion it commanded during its Series C funding last September.

Launched in 2023, Mistral quickly became one of Europe’s most prominent AI ventures, with a founding mission to “put frontier AI in the hands of everyone.” Unlike many American counterparts, the company has embraced a relatively open approach to AI development, releasing several foundational large language models with open weights that allow developers to modify and adapt them freely. Alongside these open offerings, Mistral also provides closed, proprietary models designed for specialized tasks, including programming, voice cloning and generation, and optical character recognition.

In recent months, as European nations have grown more cautious about relying on American technology, Mistral has actively positioned itself as a sovereign, homegrown alternative. The company is currently building a data center near Paris and has forged partnerships with the French military, the government of Luxembourg, and a number of major European corporations.

Despite these strides, Mistral’s total fundraising to date stands at roughly $4 billion, according to PitchBook , a fraction of the sums raised by U. S. rivals. OpenAI has brought in $186 billion, while Anthropic has secured $161.25 billion, and both carry significantly higher valuations, reflecting their far greater revenue, broader model adoption, and stronger enterprise demand.

Mistral did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reported funding discussions.
