At its annual Google I/O conference on Tuesday, the tech giant unveiled a sweeping overhaul of the Gemini app, introducing a Daily Brief feature, a completely redesigned interface, access to a new AI video model called Gemini Omni, and a personalized AI agent named Gemini Spark. These updates mark a clear strategic shift: Google is repositioning Gemini as a comprehensive AI hub rather than a simple chatbot, aiming to better compete with popular rivals like ChatGPT and Claude.

The Daily Brief is designed as a morning digest, pulling data from a user’s inbox, calendar, and top tasks to create a prioritized overview. Google emphasizes that the feature doesn’t just summarize information , it actively ranks tasks and suggests next steps, placing the most critical items front and center. This feature is rolling out today to Google AI subscribers in the United States.

With over 900 million monthly users across more than 230 countries and 70 languages, the Gemini app already has significant reach. But Google is clearly aiming for deeper engagement, not just retention. The company says it rebuilt the app from scratch, introducing a new design language called Neural Expressive.” This brings fluid animations, vibrant colors, updated typography, and haptic feedback. Gone are the traditional walls of text common to most AI chatbots. Instead, key information is bolded at the top of responses, with additional text, images, and timelines appearing as users scroll.

The Gemini Spark agent is described as a 24/7 personal AI that actively works on a user’s behalf. Unlike a passive assistant, Spark operates as a cloud-based agent that continues running even when the phone is locked. Users can create custom workflows within the Gemini app. Spark is currently in testing and is expected to launch for Google AI Ultra subscribers next week.

On the media front, Gemini Omni combines Gemini with Google’s generative media models to produce videos grounded in real knowledge. For example, a prompt like “claymation explainer of protein folding” can yield a consistent, high-quality video. Users can upload audio, images, and video to generate outputs. This move intensifies the competition among major AI platforms to lead in multimodal content generation. Gemini Omni is rolling out to Google Flow and YouTube Shorts for Google AI subscribers, underscoring Google’s broader push into AI-powered video tools and content creation.
