Amprius and Matternet partner on silicon anode batteries for drone delivery

Amprius Technologies, the Fremont-based leader in high-energy-density silicon anode batteries, has entered a strategic partnership with Matternet, a drone delivery company that holds both FAA Type Certification and Production Certification. Under the agreement, Amprius will supply its SiCore® lithium-ion cells to power Matternet’s autonomous delivery drones. This collaboration has the potential to significantly extend flight range, payload capacity, and operational efficiency for last-mile aerial logistics.

The SiCore cells are designed to deliver superior energy density compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries, enabling drones to fly longer distances or carry heavier loads without increasing battery weight. For Matternet, which operates in regulated airspace and relies on certified aircraft, integrating Amprius’s advanced battery technology could unlock new commercial use cases and improve fleet economics.

“This partnership aligns with our mission to provide the most reliable and high-performance energy solutions for electric aviation,” said an Amprius representative. Matternet’s CEO echoed the sentiment, noting that silicon anode chemistry represents a critical step forward for drone delivery systems that must balance endurance, safety, and regulatory compliance.

The deal comes as the drone delivery industry accelerates its push beyond pilot programs into scaled operations. By pairing Amprius’s battery expertise with Matternet’s certified platform, the two companies aim to set a new standard for autonomous aerial logistics. Neither firm disclosed financial terms or specific deployment timelines, but both indicated that initial integration work is already underway.
