After appearing for a handful of users last week, YouTube TV has now officially launched its fully custom multiview feature, though it comes with a few notable restrictions.
Multiview has long been a major draw for sports fans on YouTube TV, and the feature has gradually expanded over time. Now, it’s available across all channels, not just select categories.
As detailed in a recent announcement, the rollout of the custom multiview builder began last week when some subscribers spotted it early. The key update: you can now combine any live channels, including those from different add-on packages like NFL Sunday Ticket, in a single screen.
Google stated:
> “Starting now, we are moving beyond just top recommended channels to give you full control over your multiview experience. You can now use our new multiview builder to select any live content you want to see. One of the most requested features we’re introducing is the ability to mix and match content across different packages. If you are a subscriber to a YouTube TV Plan and an add-on like NFL Sunday Ticket, you can now configure those streams together in a single multiview.”
The builder offers predefined categories such as Recommended, Sports, News, Shows, Movies, and Other live content. Ultimately, though, you’re free to pick whatever you like.
However, there are two key limits. First, only live content is supported. You cannot add recordings or video-on-demand (VOD) material to a multiview layout. Additionally, some family-friendly content is excluded from customization.
Second, not every device will support the full custom experience. Google says this affects less than 5% of devices. On older hardware, users will still see a multiview builder but it will be limited to major tentpole events like the NFL or World Cup.
Content eligibility is clear: Multiview is designed for live content only. VOD and DVR recordings are not eligible, and select family-friendly programming is restricted as well. Device compatibility is rolling out to the vast majority of living room and mobile devices, with the small subset of older devices getting a simplified builder.
YouTube TV is now widely pushing out the fully custom multiview feature. What will you be tuning into?
