PS5 Now Runs Linux as a Full PC

▼ Summary

– A developer has published steps on GitHub to install Linux on some PS5 models, enabling PC game play.
– The installation is a soft mod that does not persist after powering down or restarting the console.
– The exploit works only on disc-based PS5s with older 3.xx or 4.xx firmware; 5.xx versions are not supported.
– The Linux installation includes custom VRAM allocation and fan controls but outputs video at only 60Hz.
– The developer states there is no chance of bricking the console, and support for older 1.xx and 2.xx firmware may be added later.

A developer has unlocked the ability to turn a PlayStation 5 into a fully functional Linux PC, opening the door to running PC games on Sony’s latest console. Andy Nguyen, who first showcased a ported version of Ubuntu running PC titles on a PS5 last month, has now published the complete installation steps on GitHub this week.

This soft mod is temporary, meaning it won’t survive a power cycle or restart. Once booted, however, the Linux environment allows users to play PC games. So far, demonstrations have shown GTA V running with enhanced ray tracing at 60fps, and Spider-Man achieving 1440p resolution at 60fps, all within Ubuntu on a PS5.

Nguyen’s method exploits a patched vulnerability, which limits compatibility to disc-based PS5 consoles running older firmware versions 3.xx or 4.xx. The latest 5.xx firmware is not supported. “Support for 1.xx and 2.xx firmwares may be added in the future, but we will not prioritize this effort,” Nguyen notes.

Unlike the PlayStation 4’s homebrew scene, which allowed cracked games and extensive modifications, this exploit does not enable similar efforts. The PS4 also relied on older firmware to run Linux.

The Linux installation on the PS5 includes custom VRAM allocation and working fan controls. However, after the first boot, users may need to disable and reenable the WLAN adapter to establish a full internet connection. While 1080p, 1440p, and 4K resolutions are all supported, output is currently capped at 60Hz. “120Hz or 30Hz may be added in the future,” Nguyen adds.

The developer is also exploring a shutdown feature that would put the PS5 into rest mode, allowing users to relaunch Linux when the console powers back on. Nguyen advises that only those familiar with Linux commands should attempt this. For those worried about damaging their console, he reassures that “there’s no chance of bricking” a device. All installation steps are available on GitHub, and a Discord server is available for troubleshooting.

Update, April 29th: Article updated with additional comment from Nguyen.
