Itron, a global provider of technology solutions for the utility sector, has confirmed it experienced a cybersecurity breach. The company disclosed the incident in an 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on April 24, stating that an unauthorized third party had accessed its internal IT systems.

Upon detecting the intrusion, Itron, which specializes in products and services for managing energy and water resources, swiftly activated its cybersecurity response plan. The firm launched a thorough investigation, enlisting external advisors to assess, contain, mitigate, and remediate the breach. As part of its proactive response, Itron also notified law enforcement authorities.

The company reported that it has since fully remediated the unauthorized activity and removed it from its systems, with no further unauthorized access observed within its corporate networks. Importantly, Itron stated that no unauthorized activity was detected in the customer-hosted portions of its systems, and its operations have continued without material disruption to day-to-day business.

To mitigate the financial fallout, Itron noted that it expects a significant portion of the direct costs incurred from the incident to be covered by its insurance policies. The company is currently evaluating what legal and regulatory notifications may be required based on the findings of its ongoing review and will take appropriate action accordingly.

At this stage, Itron asserted that it does not believe the incident has had, or is reasonably likely to have, a material impact on the company as a whole.
