The closed beta for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, a third-person action RPG from developer Owlcat Games, is now live across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The full version of the game is slated to launch in spring 2027 on those same platforms, alongside Epic Games Store and GOG.
While labeled a “closed beta,” this release functions more like an Early Access launch. Access is limited to players who purchase the “Collector’s Edition” or “Miller’s Pack” through the official website. The beta will remain active until the game’s full debut.
Here is a breakdown of what is included:
Setting and Story
Set in the rich universe of the acclaimed book and television series, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is a narrative-driven action-RPG that emphasizes companion relationships, meaningful player choices, and fluid third-person combat. You take on the role of a Pinkwater Security mercenary who survives a devastating incident on Eros. From there, you must assemble a team to confront Protogen and their horrific experiments. Although it shares the same universe, the game carves out its own storyline with original characters.
Closed Beta Content
Founders in the beta can choose between a female character from the Belt or a male character from Earth. They also pick a specialization: officer or hacker. Accompanied by their warm-hearted sibling J and supported by veteran mechanic Zafar, players explore a remote space station owned by Pinkwater Security, having just escaped the catastrophic events on Eros.
During the beta, you can interact with the station’s inhabitants, test dialogue options and decisions, and get a feel for daily life aboard a mercenary-filled station. When the forces behind the Eros attack catch up, combat kicks in, and you will experience the game’s upgrade mechanics firsthand.
In the final release, players will also be able to select Mars as their character’s origin, alongside the Belt and Earth. Additional specializations and customization options will be available beyond what the beta offers.
Availability and Access
The beta is playable now on Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and PlayStation 5 for founders who own the Collector’s Edition or Miller’s Pack. It will run continuously until the game launches in spring 2027. Founder packs are available for purchase on the official website. Keep in mind that the beta is a work in progress, so performance may vary and does not reflect the final product’s quality. On consoles, Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 is recommended for the best experience.
Owlcat plans to incorporate player feedback gathered during the beta into the final game.
