Atlassian adds AI tools and agents to Confluence

▼ Summary

– Atlassian announced new AI tools, including the visual tool Remix, which turns Confluence data into charts and graphics.
– Remix automatically recommends and creates visual formats for data without requiring users to switch applications.
– The company introduced three third-party agents in Confluence that connect to Lovable, Replit, and Gamma to build prototypes, apps, and presentations.
– This release is part of Atlassian’s strategy to embed AI agents directly into existing apps like Confluence and Jira, rather than launching new platforms.
– The move aligns with an industry trend of integrating AI tools into current workflows, as seen with companies like Salesforce and OpenAI.

Atlassian is integrating new AI-powered capabilities directly into its Confluence platform, shifting the focus from simple document management to dynamic content creation. Announced this week, these features include a visual tool in open beta and a suite of third-party agents designed to transform static data into actionable assets without leaving the application.

The centerpiece is Remix, a visual tool that converts Confluence data into charts, graphics, and other visual formats. It analyzes the information at hand to recommend the most suitable visual style, then generates the asset automatically. This process eliminates the need to switch to separate design software, streamlining the creation of compelling data stories.

Further expanding functionality, Atlassian introduced three new third-party agents that operate within Confluence using model context protocols (MCPs). One connects users to Lovable, enabling them to turn product concepts into working prototypes. Another integrates with Replit, allowing technical documents to be converted into starter applications. A third agent partners with Gamma to automatically generate slides and presentation materials from Confluence content.

According to Sanchan Saxena, Atlassian’s senior vice president of teamwork collaboration, these tools transform a single page into a versatile launchpad. “With Remix and agents in Confluence, a single page becomes the starting point for whatever comes next: a clear story for leaders, a prototype for builders, or a walkthrough for customers, all from the same source of truth,” he stated. “When you remove that friction, teams do more than manage documents; they create the next generation of products and experiences.”

This move is part of Atlassian’s broader strategy to embed AI agents and tools into existing workplace applications rather than building new, standalone platforms. Earlier this year, the company added similar AI agents to its Jira software for product management. This approach aligns with a wider industry trend where technology providers are prioritizing embedded AI workflows. Companies are increasingly focused on integrating intelligence directly into the tools employees already use daily to minimize disruption and accelerate adoption.

Other major players are pursuing similar paths. While Salesforce initially launched a separate AI agent platform called Agentforce, it has since channeled many innovations through established products like Slack, where its chatbot has been upgraded to a full AI agent. OpenAI’s recent Frontier Alliances initiative also reflects this philosophy, partnering with consulting firms to embed its technology directly into client workflows instead of merely offering subscription services.

This industry shift underscores a growing belief that the most effective AI is seamless and contextual. As Saxena noted in the announcement, “Technology should fade into the background and let people focus on their best work.” By bringing advanced AI tools into Confluence, Atlassian aims to make sophisticated creation and prototyping an intuitive part of the collaborative process.
