Even this entry-level category demands robust identity governance and strict credential management.
A far more pervasive and less governed challenge is the rise of local agents. These tools run directly on employee endpoints, integrating with development environments, terminals, and other workflows to automate coding, log analysis, or database queries. Their unique risk stems from their identity model: they operate by inheriting the full permissions and network access of the user who runs them. This allows for rapid, frictionless adoption, as employees can instantly connect agents to GitHub, Slack, or cloud environments without central IT approval. However, it creates a major governance gap. Security teams often lack visibility into what these agents can access or how much autonomy users grant them, effectively turning each employee into an unmonitored AI administrator. Furthermore, these agents often rely on third-party plugins from public ecosystems, introducing supply chain risk where malicious code inherits the user’s privileged access.
The most powerful and complex category is production agents. These are fully autonomous services built on agent frameworks, operating continuously to handle incident response, DevOps workflows, or customer support systems without human intervention. They run under dedicated machine identities, creating a new identity surface within the infrastructure. Their primary risks are threefold: high operational autonomy, frequent processing of untrusted external inputs which increases exposure to prompt injection attacks, and complex multi-agent architectures that can create hidden trust chains and privilege escalation paths.
Across all categories, a unifying challenge emerges. AI agents are a new class of first-class identities within the enterprise, making decisions and taking actions using permissions and credentials. When these identities are poorly governed, agents become powerful vectors for attackers or sources of operational damage. The strategic priority for security leaders is to gain comprehensive visibility and control, answering critical questions about what agents exist, what identities they use, what systems they can access, and whether their permissions are correctly scoped.
Enterprises have spent years securing human and service accounts. AI agents represent the next, rapidly arriving wave of identities that must be managed. Success will not belong to organizations that avoid AI adoption, but to those that proactively understand their agent landscape, govern their associated identities, and rigorously align permissions with intent. In this new era, identity is the control plane for enterprise AI security.
