AMD has unveiled its latest champion for PC gamers, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, which promises to deliver the highest frame rates available by pushing the boundaries of its 3D V-Cache technology. This new processor builds directly upon the foundation of the popular 9800X3D, retaining the same 8-core, 16-thread configuration and 120-watt power envelope. The key upgrade comes from a significant increase in boost clock speeds, now reaching up to 5.6GHz, a 400MHz jump over its predecessor.

According to AMD’s client CPU division head, Rahul Tikoo, this represents a finely tuned, higher-binned version of the silicon. The performance gains will vary depending on the software. On average, users can expect around a 7 percent performance improvement over the 9800X3D. The uplift is more pronounced in titles that are highly sensitive to clock frequency, such as popular esports games, where gains of 5 percent or more are typical. For most AAA game titles, however, the difference may be less noticeable.

AMD also provided competitive benchmarks, positioning the new chip against Intel’s latest offerings. The company states the Ryzen 7 9850X3D provides an average 27 percent performance uplift across a selection of over 35 games when compared to its rivals. In specific titles, the claimed advantages are substantial: 60 percent faster in Baldur’s Gate 3 and over 45 percent faster in both Hogwarts Legacy and Counter-Strike 2 when measured against Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285K.

The existing 9800X3D will remain on the market alongside this new model. The flagship position in the Ryzen 9000 series family continues to be held by the 16-core, 32-thread 9950X3D. AMD plans to launch the Ryzen 7 9850X3D in the first quarter of 2026, with final pricing and exact availability details to be announced closer to that release window.
