Peak XV Partners has officially raised the investment ceiling for its Surge seed cap to $5 million, a significant increase from the previous $3 million limit. This strategic adjustment accompanies the launch of Surge 12, the firm’s latest cohort of 18 startups. The venture capital giant, which manages over $10 billion in assets across India and Southeast Asia, views this shift as a necessary response to evolving market dynamics.

Higher Stakes at the Seed Stage

The decision to expand the funding window reflects a broader trend in the venture landscape. “The bar to raise a Series A has gone up pretty significantly,” Rajan Anandan, managing director at Peak XV, stated in an interview. He noted that the firm is increasingly encountering capital-intensive companies, particularly in the deeptech sector, that require larger initial rounds to reach viability.

Surge 12 represents the first group to operate under this new financial framework. While Peak XV declined to disclose the median investment per company, the firm confirmed it invested more than $50 million across the cohort. Collectively, these startups have raised over $90 million in seed funding. Notably, at least three of the new additions had already secured outside capital, sometimes even from Peak XV itself, prior to joining the program. This indicates a growing maturity among applicants who are leveraging existing traction to access higher-tier support.

Global Reach with Indian Roots

Although more than half of the Surge 12 companies are headquartered in India, their ambitions extend far beyond borders. Only five of the 18 startups are exclusively focused on the domestic Indian market. The remaining thirteen target global markets, illustrating a clear distinction between where founders build their products and where they intend to find customers. The cohort features entrepreneurs ranging from San Francisco to Sydney, underscoring the platform’s increasing global footprint.

Since its inception in 2019, when it operated under the name Sequoia Capital India and Southeast Asia, Surge has backed more than 180 startups. These ventures are led by founders representing over 18 nationalities. The program’s success is evident in its top performers; the ten largest companies to emerge from past cohorts now generate more than $1 billion in combined annual revenue.

Anandan described Surge as Peak XV’s primary channel for seed-stage investing, with the firm continuing to support these companies through subsequent funding rounds. The typical founder profile includes repeat entrepreneurs and specialized technical talent, with approximately 50% to 60% of each cohort comprising individuals with operating experience at established technology firms.

Diverse Innovations Across Industries

The Surge 12 cohort spans a wide array of sectors, including AI, robotics, space exploration, consumer products, healthcare, music, and fintech. The innovations range from AI safety tools and personal computing devices to autonomous robots for underground infrastructure and satellites for radio-frequency sensing.

Key Startups in the Cohort

  • Alma: Founded by Nischith Shadagopan M N and Vinod Ganesan, Alma is developing a personal computing platform designed to make computer usage faster and more affordable. Both founders previously worked at Microsoft Research and served as founding engineers at Sarvam AI, a Bengaluru-based startup creating AI models for Indian languages.Three additional startups in the cohort have not yet publicly disclosed their names or specific products. Peak XV confirmed that these hidden entities are working in the fields of education, applied AI, and medical products.
