Mozilla has entered a strategic collaboration with Mistral AI, integrating the French artificial intelligence firm’s technology into Smart Window, the experimental browsing assistant currently in beta within the Firefox browser. This partnership was unveiled on Wednesday alongside the feature’s official launch in France, marking a significant expansion for the tool.

Smart Window, which Mozilla originally introduced in August, operates as a distinct mode designed to enhance the browsing experience through AI assistance. The system is capable of summarizing complex search results while citing sources, recovering pages that users may have accidentally closed, and leveraging context from currently open tabs. While both companies highlighted the integration, their descriptions varied slightly. Mistral stated that Smart Window is “now powered by Mistral models,” whereas Mozilla clarified that it is adding Mistral Small 4 as one selectable option among a broader range of available models.

The rollout in France represents the first new market for Smart Window since its initial release in English across the US and Canada. This expansion brings official support for the French language to the assistant. Looking ahead, Mistral indicated that the United Kingdom and Germany are anticipated to receive similar access later this year. Mozilla selected Mistral Small 4 specifically due to its strong multilingual capabilities, while Mistral noted that it is actively fine-tuning its models to better handle regional languages and dialects.

A core component of this partnership is a rigorous commitment to user privacy. According to the joint announcement, conversations generated within Smart Window are not stored on Mozilla’s servers by default. Furthermore, model partners like Mistral have agreed to a policy of zero data retention. This approach aligns with Mozilla’s broader philosophy regarding web interaction.

Mozilla CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo framed the agreement as a necessary counterbalance to dominant tech players. “AI is becoming part of how people experience the web every day. We want to make sure that doesn’t mean people are chained to one company’s self-serving pipeline,” he said. “A browser shouldn’t be a one-way funnel.”

Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral, described the collaboration as a union between “two open source advocates” aimed at delivering “privacy, control and choice to AI-powered web browsing.” For Mistral, which primarily serves enterprise and government clients, this deal provides a direct channel to individual consumers. This move follows closely on the heels of the company securing €3 billion in funding at a €21 billion valuation. Mistral stated that the partnership allows it to extend its reach beyond business customers to users globally.

For Mozilla, this integration reflects a cautious entry into the AI space. Previous attempts to incorporate AI features faced backlash from Firefox users, prompting the company to add a global toggle in February that allows users to block all generative AI functions entirely. Smart Window remains an optional feature, granting users granular control over which tabs and browsing history the assistant can access.
