PlayStation Removes Purchased Content From User Libraries Again

▼ Summary

– Sony is removing all purchased Studio Canal titles from UK PlayStation libraries on September 1, 2026, due to licensing agreements.
– This is not the first removal; in December 2023, Sony removed purchased Discovery TV shows and extended the deadline after backlash.
– No compensation or refunds are being offered to affected users for the Studio Canal removal.
– Some users in Germany and Austria already lost their Studio Canal purchases in 2022.
– The PlayStation Store stopped movie and TV purchases and rentals in August 2021, but video content can still be bought via Sony Pictures Core.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has once again triggered frustration by removing purchased content from users’ PlayStation libraries. This time, customers in the United Kingdom are receiving notifications that all Studio Canal titles will disappear from their video libraries due to licensing agreements. The move echoes similar actions taken by the company in 2022 and 2023, raising fresh concerns about digital ownership.

This is not the first instance of Sony wiping out paid content. In December 2023, the company announced that PlayStation owners would eventually lose access to all their purchased Discovery TV shows, sparking widespread backlash. Sony initially offered no refunds but extended the removal deadline after intense criticism.

Now, UK-based PlayStation users are being informed that all Studio Canal films and shows will be removed from their libraries on September 1, 2026. Once again, there will be no compensation for affected customers. “Due to our content licensing agreements, you will no longer be able to access your previously purchased content from Studio Canal, and it will be removed from your video library,” the official notice states.

It is worth noting that players in certain regions, including Germany and Austria, experienced similar removals of their Studio Canal purchases as far back as 2022. The PlayStation Store discontinued movie and TV purchases and rentals in August 2021, though PS5 and PS4 users can still buy video content through Sony Pictures Core. The recurring pattern of content removal continues to undermine consumer confidence in digital purchases on the platform.
