Microsoft is marking a major milestone with a special edition console that pays tribute to two and a half decades of gaming history. The company has unveiled a limited-run Xbox Series X designed to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the original Xbox, and it brings back a beloved aesthetic from the early 2000s.

The standout feature of this new console is its translucent green casing, a direct nod to the iconic “OG Green” look of the first Xbox. Both the console body and the accompanying controller share this see-through finish, giving longtime fans a powerful dose of nostalgia. According to Jason Ronald, VP of next generation, this marks “the first time” the company has applied a translucent design to the Xbox Series X.

“We’re bringing a translucent design to Xbox Series X, drawing inspiration from the original Xbox and OG Green so many players remember,” Ronald said. “The Xbox Series X 25th Anniversary Limited Edition respects our history, with the power and performance of the Xbox Series X, including 1 TB of storage, and a design that reflects where we’ve been and the community that’s been with us along the way.”

Beyond the transparent shell, the console includes several thoughtful details. The front-facing X logo lights up green when powered on, and a dedicated 25th anniversary emblem is placed prominently on the front panel. Microsoft has also teased “a few hidden surprises throughout” the design, calling them a thank you to the community.

The controller gets its own retro treatment. The face buttons return to the original ABXY color scheme, and the bumpers are styled to honor the black and white buttons found on the original Duke controller. The back casing and battery door are fully transparent, with the classic Xbox logo visible beneath the surface.

Both the console and controller are slated for a November release. However, Microsoft has not yet confirmed an exact launch date or the final pricing for this commemorative hardware.
