Galaxy Watch 9 leak reveals three models and a Google-inspired feature

▼ Summary

– Samsung’s Galaxy Watch lineup typically alternates between standard and Classic models one year, and experimental models the next, as seen with the Watch 5 Pro and Watch Ultra.
– Leaked codenames from a Wear OS update suggest a Galaxy Watch 9 Classic may launch alongside a Galaxy Watch 9 and an updated Galaxy Watch Ultra 2.
– The codenames “fresh9” and “wise9” match the development names of the Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic, supporting the leak.
– A code change for Raise-to-Talk in Wear OS hints the feature may expand beyond Pixel Watches to third-party devices like Samsung watches.
– Samsung is expected to reveal its new smartwatch range on July 22, providing confirmation of these rumors.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch lineup has long followed a predictable cadence: one year brings a standard model and a Classic, while the next introduces a more experimental variant. We saw that with the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro and later the Galaxy Watch Ultra arriving alongside the Galaxy Watch 7. Now, fresh leaks suggest the pattern is shifting again.

According to a recent discovery by Android Authority, code buried within a Wear OS update points to three upcoming models: codenames “fresh9”, “wise9”, and “projectv2”. For context, the Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic were internally known as “Fresh 8” and “Wise 8”, making the connection to a Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch 9 Classic fairly straightforward. The link to a Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is slightly less direct, but the previous Ultra was codenamed “Project X2”, so “projectv2” feels like a natural successor.

More intriguing is what the code reveals about a potential software upgrade. Google appears to be tweaking the Raise-to-Talk feature, currently exclusive to the Pixel Watch 4. The code now includes a version tagged “WearOS” with a “3p” addition, which Android Authority interprets as “third party”. This strongly suggests that Google may open up Raise-to-Talk to other Wear OS devices, including Samsung’s lineup. Such a move would make sense: keeping the feature exclusive limits the broader adoption of Gemini on smartwatches, and there’s little strategic advantage in hoarding it.

While all of this remains speculative, the evidence is mounting. Samsung is expected to unveil its next smartwatch generation on July 22, so we won’t have to wait long to see if these codenames and features become reality.
