– This builds on previous Uber services like Connect and Direct, which also utilized couriers for package and retail delivery.

Uber has introduced a new service allowing users to return eligible online purchases directly from their doorstep. This feature, now available within the Uber Eats app, represents a strategic move to increase user engagement by expanding beyond the company’s foundational ride-hailing and food delivery operations. While convenient, the service includes a variable courier fee and several important restrictions.

The process is designed for simplicity. Users navigate to their order history, select the item for return, and choose the “Return with a courier” option. This eliminates the traditional hassles of driving to a store, searching for parking, and waiting in line. A notable perk for some customers is the potential for an instant refund upon initiating the return. Currently, the service is limited to items originally purchased through Uber Eats from a specific set of partner retailers, including Target, Best Buy, Petco, and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Uber has stated it plans to add more stores in the future.

Several key limitations apply. Customers can only return products with a retail price above $20, and all returns must comply with each individual store’s return policy. The courier fee for the pickup is calculated based on the driver’s time and travel distance.

This is not Uber’s first venture beyond its core services. The company previously launched Uber Connect, a peer-to-peer package delivery service. In 2023, Connect was expanded to include a “Return a Package” feature, enabling gig workers to take up to five parcels to postal carriers like UPS, FedEx, or the USPS. Another prior initiative, Uber Direct, facilitated contactless doorstep delivery from select retailers, a service shaped by consumer demands during the COVID-19 pandemic. The new in-app returns feature builds on this history, further integrating Uber into the daily logistics of its users.
