GoPro has officially entered a new professional tier with the launch of its Mission 1 camera line, a series of video-focused action cameras built around a powerful 50-megapixel 1-inch sensor and the company’s new GP3 processor. The rollout will occur in two phases, starting with the base Mission 1 and the enhanced Mission 1 Pro on May 28th. A flagship model, the Mission 1 Pro ILS, featuring an interchangeable Micro Four Thirds lens mount, is slated for release in the third quarter of 2026. Final pricing for all models is still to be determined.
The standard Mission 1 offers robust video capabilities, including 8K/30fps recording in a 16:9 aspect ratio and open-gate 4K/120fps using the full 4:3 sensor. It can also capture 1080p slow-motion video at up to 240 frames per second. The Mission 1 Pro elevates these specs, supporting 8K/60fps in 16:9 and 8K/30fps in open gate, with high-speed recording reaching an impressive 960fps at 1080p. Both of these initial models come with a fixed 15mm equivalent f/2.8 lens permanently attached.
The forthcoming Mission 1 Pro ILS represents a significant leap for creators seeking ultimate flexibility. Its interchangeable lens system unlocks access to the vast ecosystem of Micro Four Thirds optics from manufacturers like Panasonic and OM Digital Solutions, with further options available via adapters. Lenses attached to this body will have a 3x crop factor, which limits ultra-wide-angle possibilities but provides exceptional reach with telephoto lenses, effectively turning them into super-telephotos.
Designed for extended professional use, the entire Mission 1 family incorporates improved thermal management, allowing for over three hours of continuous 4K/30fps recording or more than five hours at 1080p/30fps. Other advanced features include live metering, a high 240mbps bit rate, and a new Enduro 2 battery that supports Power Delivery 2.0 fast charging and remains backwards compatible with the GoPro Hero 13 Black. For audio, the cameras are equipped with four built-in microphones, 32-bit float recording, and support for both USB-C audio and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.
Photographers are not left out, as the 50-megapixel sensor can capture RAW files or produce 12-megapixel JPGs using GoPro’s SuperPhoto processing for ready-to-share images. When recording 8K video, users can extract high-resolution 44-megapixel still frames directly from the footage.
While slightly larger than a traditional Hero model, the Mission 1 cameras maintain a compact, shockproof and waterproof form factor. GoPro plans to offer specialized kits tailored for different workflows. The Grip Edition bundle includes a handle that makes the camera handle like a small mirrorless body, while the Creator Edition comes packaged with the new GoPro Wireless Mic System. This microphone is designed to compete with popular mini-mics from DJI and Rode, will be sold separately, and is built for compatibility with other camera systems, though its price has not yet been announced.
