Meta’s AI application has surged into the top five on the U.S. App Store, a dramatic rise fueled by the release of its new Muse Spark AI model. This launch marks the first major model introduced under the leadership of Alexandr Wang, who was recruited from Scale AI last year to lead Meta’s Superintelligence Labs and overhaul the company’s artificial intelligence strategy.

Market intelligence from Appfigures shows the app catapulted from the 57th position just before Wednesday’s launch to the 5th spot by Thursday, signaling a massive influx of new users. Sensor Tower provided complementary data, estimating U. S. iOS downloads for Meta AI reached approximately 46,000 on April 8, representing an 87% increase from the previous day. Android downloads in the U. S. saw a more modest 3% uptick on the same day.

The company positions Muse Spark as a substantial upgrade over its previous Llama 4 models, representing its latest push to compete with leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic. This competitive effort has involved billions spent on recruiting top AI talent, in addition to Meta’s $14.3 billion strategic investment in Scale AI. The new model accepts multimodal input including voice, text, and images, and is designed for a range of tasks from health education to reasoning through complex scientific and mathematical questions. It also supports visual coding, enabling users to generate websites and mini-games from simple prompts. A notable feature is the app’s ability to launch multiple subagents to handle user inquiries efficiently.

Meta plans to roll out Muse Spark across its ecosystem in the coming weeks, integrating it into platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and its AI glasses. The launch was accompanied by a refreshed design for the Meta AI mobile app and website, which now allows users to switch between different operational modes based on their task.

Despite this impressive growth, Meta AI still trails behind the leading AI chatbots in the app stores. It currently sits behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini, which hold the top three positions. Alexandr Wang highlighted the app’s rapid ascent in a social media post earlier Thursday, noting it had reached the 6th position and was “still growing.”

Globally, Appfigures reports the Meta AI app has been installed over 60.5 million times across the App Store and Google Play, with a remarkable 25 million of those downloads occurring just this year. Downloads have skyrocketed by 138% over the past five months compared to the app’s first five months of availability. India has emerged as the top market for downloads, followed by the United States, Brazil, Pakistan, and Mexico.

Interest has spiked beyond mobile platforms as well. Sensor Tower data indicates U. S. daily web traffic for Meta AI surged more than 450% day-over-day on April 8, reaching an all-time high. This web traffic figure represents an increase of over 570% compared to the average daily visitors recorded over the preceding 30-day period.
