With the launch of Directive 8020 approaching on May 12, developer Supermassive Games has detailed the specific enhancements players can expect on the PlayStation 5 and the more powerful PS5 Pro. These technical upgrades are designed to amplify the horror experience, making every visual detail and tense moment more impactful.
The most notable improvement for the PS5 Pro version comes from PSSR, or PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. According to studio technical director Will Burdon, this technology intelligently sharpens the image frame by frame. This results in crisper environments, more defined character models, and greater clarity for the subtle details that build the game’s atmosphere. Elements like the metallic sheen of a spaceship corridor, frost creeping across a lab window, or a distorted reflection in a helmet visor all gain from this added sharpness.
Beyond image clarity, the Pro model leverages advanced ray tracing to create more realistic lighting. This means shadows and light behave authentically in the game’s dark corridors and confined spaces, directly heightening the sense of dread. Dynamic shadows add a layer of depth and unpredictable movement to scenes, preventing environments from feeling static. Burdon notes that this richer shadow rendering subtly reinforces the pervasive unease central to the horror experience.
Performance also receives a significant boost. The PS5 Pro enhanced version targets a smoother, more consistent frame rate. This ensures the game’s cinematic transitions and camera movements remain fluid, which is critical for the title’s tense, split-second decision-making. Players need reliable performance to make choices that will permanently alter the narrative.
From its inception, the game was crafted with the PlayStation 5 and its DualSense Wireless Controller in mind. Supermassive aimed to make interactions feel instinctive, whether a player is fumbling for a flashlight button or grabbing a tool at the last possible moment. The controller’s haptic feedback is used to literally put fear in your hands during pivotal choices and tool use. Furthermore, audio routed through the controller will alert players to distant characters trying to communicate via an in-game messenger, deepening immersion. The goal, as Burdon states, was to transform the controller into a true survival tool that keeps players on the edge of their seats.
Directive 8020 will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It will also include a local couch co-op mode titled Movie Night, supporting up to five players who each control a different crew member through the entire story.
