Reddit to Require Human Verification for Suspicious Accounts

▼ Summary

– Reddit will require accounts with suspicious automated behavior to verify they are human, aiming to distinguish people from AI bots.
– The verification process is rare and will not apply to most users, targeting only accounts Reddit suspects are bots.
– Verification will use third-party tools that protect user anonymity by not exposing true identity, username, or activity.
– Methods under exploration include passkeys and third-party biometric services like World ID, which uses iris scanning.
– A last-resort method involves third-party government ID services, which Reddit considers the least secure and private option.

In a significant move to preserve authentic human interaction online, Reddit has announced a new policy requiring suspicious accounts to undergo human verification. CEO Steve Huffman detailed the initiative in a company post, explaining it targets accounts displaying automated or fishy behavior. The decision comes as the proliferation of AI-powered bots across the internet threatens to degrade the quality of community discussions. This verification framework is designed to ensure users can distinguish between genuine human conversations and automated interactions.

Huffman stressed that the process will be selectively applied. “We want to make sure that when you’re on Reddit, you know when you’re talking to a person and when you’re not,” he stated. The system will only flag accounts Reddit suspects are bots, a scenario Huffman described as “rare” that will not affect the vast majority of users. Accounts unable to successfully verify they are operated by a person may face restrictions.

The verification itself will utilize third-party tools that protect user privacy. According to Huffman, these methods will not reveal a user’s true identity, their Reddit username, or their activity on the platform. Initial approaches under consideration include passkey technology, though Huffman noted this primarily confirms a human action occurred rather than proving individual uniqueness.

Reddit is also evaluating more advanced biometric verification services, such as World ID which employs iris-scanning. Huffman expressed support for these privacy-centric solutions, stating, “I think the Internet needs verification solutions like this, where your account information, usage data, and identity never mix.”

As a final option, the company may employ third-party government ID services, which are already mandated by law in certain regions like the United Kingdom. Huffman characterized this as the “least secure, least private, and least preferred” method. When compelled to use it, Reddit designs integrations so it never directly handles or views a user’s identification data, preventing any link between a Reddit account and a person’s official identity.
