A new action RPG blending feudal Japanese tradition with far-future science fiction has been announced. SOL Shogunate is described as the first true samurai space opera, arriving on consoles and PC via Steam in 2027. The project comes from Chaos Manufacturing, a studio formed by veteran developers with extensive experience across numerous celebrated game franchises.
The game’s CEO, Guy Costantini, outlined the ambitious vision for this debut title. He emphasized a fusion of fluid, spectacle-driven combat within a sci-fi universe that deeply respects the majesty of samurai heritage. The goal is to weave together combat, narrative, and music into a single, thrilling experience designed to be both emotional and unforgettable for players.
SOL Shogunate transports players to an alternate-future solar system where the way of the sword is the ultimate law. Humanity has colonized the planets under the iron rule of a powerful Shogunate, but that control is beginning to fracture. Players assume the role of Yuzuki, the shattered heir of a once-great samurai family brutally massacred by a rival clan. Cast out and seeking vengeance, Yuzuki transforms into an outlaw ronin, embarking on a violent, blood-soaked quest for retribution in a single-player, third-person adventure.
The gameplay promises unrelenting samurai action with a significant degree of player choice. Multiple weapon types will be available, each offering completely unique fighting styles and lethal capabilities for engaging foes at any range. Combat customization extends beyond mere steel. A system called Transcending Flesh and Steel allows warriors to infuse their chosen weapon with different elemental effects, gaining a tactical advantage. Furthermore, players can collect gene splices to tailor unique skills, enabling upgrades like bio-ceramic skin or enhanced vision to evolve their character into the ultimate weapon.
Exploration is a key pillar of the experience, focusing on a reimagined lunar landscape. The moon features gleaming metropolises that generate their own artificial gravity, with each city paying homage to a revered era in Japanese history and symbolizing the Shogunate’s dominance. Players can traverse these astro-feudal biomes astride a mechanized steed or monocycle, using gravity-assist gear to navigate and uncover secrets from a long-forgotten war.
The journey will be punctuated by monumental boss fights. These encounters are designed to be dynamic and cinematic, featuring multiple phases that challenge players to identify and exploit specific weaknesses. The intensity of these battles is underscored by a dynamic musical score, with tracks that evolve as the combat escalates. The soundtrack features original music from talented recording artists, including the Japanese rock band AliA, with more contributors to be announced later.
