▼ Summary

– Plex now requires a subscription for remote access to personal media servers, ending the previous free service.
– Server owners must have a Plex Pass ($7/month) or users can buy a Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass ($2/month) for remote access.
– The new rules took effect on April 29, 2024, starting with the Roku OS app for remote streaming.
– By 2026, the subscription requirement will extend to all Plex TV apps and third-party clients using the API.
– These changes are part of Plex’s broader strategy, including recent price hikes, movie rentals, and feature introductions.

A significant shift is underway for Plex users who share their media libraries. The platform is now enforcing a subscription requirement for anyone wanting to remotely stream content from a personal media server. This change effectively ends the long-standing ability for server owners to offer free remote access to friends and family outside their home network.

Before this policy update, individuals could freely connect to a server owner’s personal collection from any location. The new system, first detailed in March, mandates that the server administrator must hold an active Plex Pass subscription to enable this functionality for their users. A Plex Pass membership begins at a monthly cost of seven dollars. For those who only wish to watch content remotely without hosting their own server, Plex introduced an alternative in April called the Remote Watch Pass. This more limited subscription is available starting at two dollars per month.

These revised rules officially became active on April 29th. According to a company representative on the Plex forums, the enforcement is being implemented gradually, starting this week. The initial rollout affects individuals using Plex’s application on Roku devices for remote viewing. The employee further clarified that this subscription mandate for remote streaming will expand to all other Plex TV applications, including those for Fire TV, Apple TV, and Android TV, sometime in 2026. The requirement will also extend to any third-party applications that utilize Plex’s API to provide remote access.

Plex originated in 2009 as a Mac-compatible version of the Xbox Media Center, eventually growing into a prominent media server company and, more recently, a provider of streaming services. These new access rules represent a substantial test for the company. Over the past year, Plex has introduced a series of changes that have impacted its dedicated user base, including an increase in Plex Pass pricing, a venture into offering officially licensed movies for rental, and the rollout of new social functions alongside a comprehensive redesign of its mobile application.
