TCL has officially entered the competitive compact Android tablet market with the launch of its new TCL Tab 8 NXTPAPER 5G, available starting today for an attractive price of $199. This device marks the company’s latest effort to bring its unique display technology to a smaller, more portable form factor.
The centerpiece of the tablet is the NXTPAPER display, a technology TCL has been refining for several years. It combines specific hardware and software enhancements designed to reduce eye strain. The screen features a matte texture and employs DC dimming instead of PWM dimming, which is particularly beneficial for viewing in low-light conditions. Additional optimizations target blue light emission, aiming to create a more comfortable viewing experience over long periods. On the software side, a special mode can transform the interface into a black-and-white e-reader simulation.
While similar eye-comfort features have appeared on various smartphones and tablets, this launch represents TCL’s first application of NXTPAPER in a smaller Android tablet. The device sports an 8.7-inch NXTPAPER display and utilizes the newest NXTPAPER 4.0 software that was introduced earlier this year.
Aligning with recent NXTPAPER products, the tablet includes a dedicated physical button for swiftly switching between its different display modes. Under the hood, however, the hardware is modest. It is powered by an unspecified octa-core processor, paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, specifications that are considered entry-level by today’s standards. For expansion, a microSD card slot is available, and it is powered by a substantial 6,000 mAh battery. The tablet ships with Android 15 out of the box.
A key feature of this model is its 5G connectivity, though it comes with a significant caveat regarding availability. The TCL Tab 8 NXTPAPER will be an exclusive offering for Verizon Wireless at launch. TCL has indicated that the tablet will also arrive on Total Wireless, which is owned by Verizon, at a later date. For now, it can only be purchased directly from Verizon for $199.99.
