Microsoft Fixes Windows Firewall Bug Causing False Errors

▼ Summary
– Microsoft fixed a Windows Firewall error in Windows 11 24H2 with the KB5062660 update, resolving incorrect warnings after rebooting.
– The bug, acknowledged on July 3rd, caused false “Config Read Failed” events in Event Viewer but didn’t affect firewall functionality.
– Microsoft initially mislabeled the issue as resolved on July 8th before providing the actual fix in the August update.
– The error stemmed from an unfinished feature not fully integrated into the OS, leading to misleading event logs.
– Similar issues, like invalid BitLocker and WinRE update errors, were also recently resolved by Microsoft.
Microsoft has addressed a critical Windows Firewall glitch that was generating false error messages on systems running Windows 11 24H2. The issue, which emerged after installing the June 2025 preview update, has now been resolved with the latest KB5062660 cumulative update. This fix will roll out broadly as part of the upcoming August Patch Tuesday releases.
The problem first came to light earlier this month when Microsoft advised administrators to disregard misleading warnings appearing in the Event Viewer under Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. These errors, logged as Event ID 2042, displayed a “Config Read Failed” message alongside a “More data is available” notification. Despite the alarming appearance, the company clarified that these alerts were harmless and did not indicate any actual firewall malfunctions.
Initially, Microsoft attributed the issue to an experimental feature still in development, which hadn’t been fully integrated into the OS. A week later, the company retracted an earlier statement mistakenly marking the bug as resolved, promising a proper fix would arrive soon.
This isn’t the first time Windows users have encountered misleading system alerts. Earlier this year, Microsoft tackled a separate problem where the April 2025 Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates triggered false 0x80070643 failure errors. Similarly, in the same month, the company fixed a BitLocker encryption reporting bug that inaccurately flagged encryption issues on managed Windows 10 and 11 devices.
While these errors caused unnecessary concern, Microsoft confirmed they had no real impact on system functionality. The latest firewall fix underscores the company’s ongoing efforts to refine Windows 11’s stability, particularly as new features undergo testing before full deployment. Users can expect smoother performance once the August updates are applied.
