Microsoft is making a major push to bridge the gap between console and PC gaming by officially launching original Xbox backward compatibility on PC. Today, an early preview release brings four classic Xbox titles to Windows, signaling a broader strategy to port more legacy console games to the platform in the months ahead.

The first wave includes Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. Gamers can purchase and download each title individually, and they are also included with all Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. If you already own a digital copy of any of these games, you can now play them on PC or on handheld devices like the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X.

To ensure a smooth experience on modern hardware, Microsoft has added several PC-specific graphical enhancements while preserving the original gameplay. These include VSync support, up to 4x resolution upscaling, anisotropic filtering, enhanced anti-aliasing, and both fullscreen and windowed display modes. Achievements are also on the way for all four titles over the coming months, a feature heavily requested by both console and PC players. Customizable language and audio settings are available from launch.

System requirements are modest, making these games accessible on most modern machines. The minimum specs call for an Nvidia GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 550, Intel UHD 770, or Intel Arc A310 GPU, paired with an Intel Core i3-8100, AMD Ryzen 3 1200, or AMD Ryzen Z2 A Processor, along with 8GB of RAM. Windows 11 is required. For the best experience, Microsoft recommends a GTX 1070 Ti or equivalent and a six-core CPU such as the Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600.

“This marks the beginning of a broader effort to preserve Xbox games from the past and bring them to PC over time,” said Jason Ronald, vice president of next generation at Xbox. “Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC is another step toward preserving the games from the past and making it easier for you to enjoy and play more of the games you already own across the devices you use every day.”

Ronald first teased the initiative earlier this year during discussions about the next-generation Project Helix Xbox console. Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox hardware will also support PC games, and the company is developing a disc-to-digital feature that will allow Xbox owners to digitize their existing physical game collections in preparation for future consoles.
