If you were planning to snag a physical copy of the upcoming Gothic Remake for preservation purposes, you may want to reconsider. The publisher has confirmed that the disc-based version of the classic 2001 RPG revival will require a day-one update before it can be played.
On May 22, the watchdog account Does It Play, which tracks whether physical game releases function without patches or downloads, posted that THQ’s Gothic Remake demands an internet connection. This finding came after early copies were distributed and someone attempted to launch the game without downloading the mandatory patch. Instead of loading, the game displayed an error message directing players to connect online.
“Cancel your pre-orders! Gothic Remake is unplayable offline,” the account declared. The post quickly gained traction, prompting THQ to clarify the situation. The publisher stated that while a constant online connection is not required, the game does depend on a single day-one patch before it will boot.
“For us, the most important thing is that people can play on launch date and time. To achieve that we sent out copies earlier,” the official Gothic Game account wrote on Twitter, responding directly to the original post. “Gothic 1 Remake will need a download of around 5 GB on launch day and will then be fully playable offline – no permanent internet connection is needed.”
Kotaku reached out to THQ for further comment but did not receive a response.
So, no, you won’t need to stay online constantly to enjoy the Gothic revival. That’s a relief. But here is the catch: if you buy a physical disc, you still must download that 5 GB patch before you can start playing. For many players, that’s a minor inconvenience. For those who care deeply about video game preservation, however, this is a serious problem. It means every launch-day copy is tethered to a server that might not exist in 20 years. If that patch disappears from certain platforms, those discs become nothing more than decorative coasters.
Gothic Remake arrives on June 5 across consoles and PC. Let’s hope future printings include all necessary updates so the physical version can stand on its own without needing a one-time internet handshake.
