The Steam storefront has officially recognized the bullet heaven genre with a dedicated tag, cementing its place in the gaming ecosystem following the explosive popularity of titles like Vampire Survivors.
This move came as part of a broader update from Valve, which introduced a sweeping overhaul of the platform’s tagging system. The company explained the changes in a news post, stating they were made “with the goal of helping players identify the games that best fit their interests, and helping Steam generate appropriate recommendations.” In total, 17 new tags were added to the store, while 28 existing tags were removed.
The new bullet heaven tag is defined by Valve as “the opposite of bullet hell; Focus on upgrades while automatically attacking hordes of enemies.” It joins a diverse set of new categories, including desktop companion, cleaning, decorating, wuxia, and poker. For players with a soft spot for wildlife, specific animal tags like wolves and capybaras have also been introduced.
On the removal side, the cleanup targeted tags that were redundant, overly subjective, or tied to specific intellectual properties. Among the casualties are Games Workshop, Kickstarter, blood, america, and ambient. Valve’s goal here was to streamline discovery and reduce clutter.
A fascinating statistic emerged from the update: the singleplayer tag is now the most popular label on Steam, applied to roughly 98,000 games. It is closely followed by the indie tag, which adorns more than 82,000 titles. Rounding out the top five are action, casual, and adventure in third, fourth, and fifth place respectively.
Browsing the bullet heaven tag today reveals a strong lineup of indie titles. Standouts include Megabonk, The Spell Brigade, and Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, all of which showcase the genre’s core loop of automatic combat and upgrade-driven progression.
