It turns out Fox McCloud’s brief cameo in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie was more than just a fun nod. Nintendo has surprise-announced the first new Star Fox game in a decade, simply titled Star Fox, and it is arriving much sooner than expected. The game launches on June 25th for the Switch 2.
According to Nintendo, the title is “based” on the classic space shooter Star Fox 64, but features redesigned characters and upgraded visuals. In practice, this sounds like a modern remake that retains the original’s level design while bringing the look fully into the present. The debut trailer shows incredibly detailed characters, including a surprisingly realistic Slippy Toad, and reassures fans that the familiar in-ship banter is still present. Beyond flying ships, players will also get to pilot other vehicles, including a submarine.
The Star Fox reboot introduces several new features as well. A four-on-four dogfighting multiplayer battle mode supports online play, and the game includes an option to play with mouse controls. Perhaps the most surprising addition is the ability to use realistic character avatars during online play. Nintendo describes this as an “interactive avatar that mirrors your expressions and movements in GameChat.” For those craving a classic feel, the game also supports the N64 controller.
The full 15-minute Star Fox presentation is available for viewing online. This announcement comes at a time when Nintendo’s Switch 2 lineup for the rest of 2026 is relatively sparse. Beyond Star Fox, the only first-party titles currently scheduled include Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Rhythm Heaven Groove, Splatoon Raiders, and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave.
