Google Messages Expands Circular Read Receipts

▼ Summary
– Google Messages began testing a circular redesign for read receipts in August 2024, which is now widely available to beta users.
– The new design integrates the receipt into the bottom-right corner of message bubbles, replacing the previous double-bubble system with a single circle having four distinct states.
– To view the message send time and encryption lock, users must now swipe left on a message, while swiping right enables a reply.
– The updated circular read receipts also appear within the main conversation list view, not just within individual chats.
– The rollout has been gradual and unstable at times, but the current beta version indicates this is the final design being widely distributed to testers.
Google Messages has officially broadened the rollout of its redesigned circular read receipts, a feature that has been in testing since August 2024 and is now widely available for beta program participants. This visual overhaul represents a significant shift in how users interact with and interpret message statuses within the app, moving away from the traditional checkmark system to a more integrated and modern aesthetic.
The new design relocates the read receipt indicator from beneath the message bubble to the bottom-right corner of the bubble itself. This change applies to both text messages and standalone media like photos or videos. The familiar double-checkmark iconography has been completely replaced by a single, dynamic circle that communicates four distinct states through its appearance. An animated ellipsis indicates a message is sending. A single checkmark enclosed by a ring shows the message has been sent. A double checkmark within a ring confirms the message has been delivered to the recipient’s device. Finally, a solid circle containing a double checkmark signifies the message has been read.
Accessing additional message details has also been updated with this redesign. To view the precise time a message was sent or to see the RCS encryption lock icon, users now need to swipe left on the message bubble. Tapping on the message still triggers a familiar bounce animation, which now also serves to subtly indicate this new swipe-to-reveal functionality. Swiping right on a bubble continues to provide the quick reply option.
This new circular read receipt system is not confined to individual chats; it also appears within the main conversation list view, providing at-a-glance status updates without needing to open a specific thread. Google’s development process for this feature has been notably gradual, with some users on the stable public version reporting sightings for months. The beta rollout has been particularly iterative, with the feature appearing and disappearing for various testers multiple times over the testing period.
With the release of beta version 2026022001RC00 this week, the circular read receipts appear to be in a final, widespread deployment phase for testers. While the protracted rollout suggests Google has been methodically refining the backend and user experience, the current design is clearly positioned as the final visual language for message statuses in Google Messages moving forward.
