Samsung Debuts World’s First 1,040Hz and 6K Gaming Monitors

▼ Summary
– Samsung has announced several new PC gaming monitors, including a 32-inch 6K model with glasses-free 3D and a 27-inch model with a 1,040 Hz refresh rate.
– The flagship 6K monitor, the Odyssey 3D G9, supports 165 Hz at native resolution and an alternate 330 Hz mode at 3K, using an IPS panel instead of Samsung’s typical VA technology.
– A key feature of the new monitors is a shift to IPS panels across the LCD lineup, which may indicate a change in strategy as Samsung winds down its own LCD manufacturing.
– Samsung also announced a new 32-inch 4K QD-OLED monitor, the Odyssey OLED G8, with a 240 Hz refresh rate and the latest panel technology for high brightness and HDR.
– Pricing and further details for all the new monitors are not yet available, with more information expected at the upcoming CES show.
Samsung has unveiled a series of new gaming monitors ahead of the January tech shows, headlined by two groundbreaking displays: a 32-inch 6K model with glasses-free 3D and a 27-inch panel capable of a staggering 1,040 Hz refresh rate. These announcements set new benchmarks for visual fidelity and motion clarity in the competitive monitor market.
The flagship Samsung Odyssey 3D G9 G90XH is a 32-inch monitor with a 6,144 by 3,456 pixel resolution. While that matches other 6K screens, Samsung’s offering pushes the refresh rate to 165 Hz at native 6K, with an alternate mode that runs at 3K resolution and 330 Hz. This high-speed 3K mode uses integer scaling from the native 6K panel, which should preserve impressive image quality. Notably, it incorporates an IPS panel instead of Samsung’s typical VA technology, with a quoted 1 ms gray-to-gray response time. The monitor’s most distinctive feature is its glasses-free 3D technology with eye tracking, though the practical benefits and any potential impact on standard 2D image quality remain to be thoroughly evaluated. For users skeptical of 3D, Samsung also introduced the Odyssey G8 G80HS, which is essentially the same 6K, high-refresh monitor without the 3D capabilities.
On the opposite end of the spectrum lies the speed-focused Samsung Odyssey G6 G60H. This 27-inch monitor features a 1440p native resolution with a 600 Hz refresh rate. It achieves its headline-grabbing 1,040 Hz figure in a dedicated “HD” mode, which is likely 720p resolution to allow for proper integer scaling on the 1440p panel. This trade-off means accepting a significant drop in pixel density for the ultimate in motion fluidity. Like the new 6K model, it also utilizes an IPS panel.
This shift to IPS technology across Samsung’s new LCD-based Odyssey lineup, including the 27-inch 5K Odyssey G8 G80HF with 180 Hz native and 360 Hz modes, marks a potential strategic change. Given Samsung’s well-documented move away from LCD manufacturing in favor of QD-OLED, these IPS panels are likely sourced externally, possibly from LG.
Samsung hasn’t forgotten its advanced display tech, also announcing the Odyssey OLED G8 G80SH. This 32-inch 4K QD-OLED monitor runs at 240 Hz, with a full-screen brightness of 300 nits and DisplayHDR TrueBlack 500 certification, suggesting it uses the latest panel generation. Pricing and full availability details for all these monitors are expected to be clarified during the upcoming CES events.
