A significant number of new titles on Steam are struggling to achieve even minimal financial returns, with recent data suggesting that over a third of games released in 2025 have failed to recoup the platform’s basic submission fee. This insight comes from analytics provided by Gamalytic, which tracks performance metrics across Valve’s digital storefront.
According to figures shared by Artur Smiarowski, developer of Soulash, nearly 13,000 games have launched on Steam so far this year. While that number falls short of the 18,000 releases seen in 2024, it already approaches the 13,179 titles launched throughout the entirety of 2023, and there are still months remaining in the current year.
The sheer volume of new games inevitably means many will be overlooked. Smiarowski’s analysis indicates that approximately 40% of 2025 releases did not earn back the $100 fee required to publish on Steam, having generated less than $1,000 in gross revenue. At the same time, a smaller but notable segment, around 8%, or roughly 1,140 games, reportedly grossed over $100,000. This proportion of successful titles appears consistent with previous years, suggesting that while the total number of developers finding success may be growing, so too is the pool of games competing for attention.
Gamalytic’s estimates come with certain limitations, as Steam does not publicly disclose comprehensive sales data. The site acknowledges that accuracy decreases for lower-performing titles, making it difficult to gauge the exact financial outcomes for the least visible games. Still, the figures offer a sobering look at the challenges indie developers face in a crowded and competitive marketplace.
Beyond the statistics, Smiarowski also highlighted some of the lowest-selling games on Steam priced under $10. While many fit expected molds, such as Vampire Survivors-inspired clones and deck-building roguelikes, the list also revealed a surprising diversity of genres. Titles included inventive puzzle games, retro-style platformers, and even cel-shaded cyberpunk brawlers. Some of these overlooked projects might have found an audience under different circumstances, though others, like one titled Femdom Tower Defence, likely faced more inherent barriers to mainstream appeal.
