United Airlines has enhanced its mobile application for iOS and Android, introducing a suite of new tools aimed at streamlining the travel experience. A key addition is the integration of estimated TSA wait times, providing passengers with clearer guidance on airport arrival. This feature arrives amid ongoing operational pressures, including staffing challenges at security checkpoints resulting from the recent partial government shutdown.

Within the app’s Travel section, users can now access projected wait times for standard and TSA PreCheck lanes at United’s major U. S. hubs. These include airports in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, San Francisco, and Washington, D. C. The data offers a terminal-specific view to help travelers better navigate their pre-flight routine.

“We recognize the dedication of TSA personnel, and while many have received back pay, the broader shutdown situation continues,” stated Jason Birnbaum, United’s chief information officer. “Passengers want reliable information. Since our customers depend on the app for their journey, this feature delivers vital insights for planning.”

Beyond security times, the update introduces several connectivity and rebooking enhancements. For those with tight layovers, the app now provides personalized, turn-by-turn directions to connecting gates, complete with walking time estimates and real-time updates. It can also alert users if the airline is able to briefly hold a departing flight for late-arriving passengers.

Should a flight be disrupted, the app’s automatic rebooking assistance activates. Instead of searching manually or queuing for an agent, travelers are presented with alternative flight options. The system simultaneously provides baggage tracking details and, when applicable, facilitates access to meal and hotel vouchers.

For baggage concerns, United has integrated Apple’s Share Item Location feature. Travelers using an AirTag or compatible Find My network accessory can now share their bag’s location directly with customer service if it goes missing.

Finally, the app now pushes text updates with real-time radar maps, illustrating how weather systems in one region may create ripple effects, potentially disrupting flights elsewhere in the network. This aims to give passengers a broader context for schedule changes.
