Amazon Prime Video is currently piloting a generative AI tool designed to help viewers refresh their memories before diving into a new season of their favorite shows. This innovative Video Recaps feature automatically identifies key story developments and character arcs, then assembles a brief, high-quality summary video. These recaps blend selected clips with music, dialogue, and a synthesized voiceover to deliver a cinematic refresher.

Starting this week, the beta version of Video Recaps is being introduced on a selection of English-language Prime Original series. Subscribers can access these for shows like Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Upload, Bosch, The Rig, and Fallout, with the latter’s second season arriving in December 2025. Available recaps, which include the text-based X-Ray summaries launched last year, can be found by selecting the recap button on a show’s detail page when moving to a new season. Initially, the feature is limited to Fire TV devices designed for living rooms, but Amazon plans to extend availability to other platforms in the near future.

To create each recap, the system first examines an entire season, pinpointing crucial plot developments and character journeys to grasp the moments most meaningful to the audience. It then curates relevant video segments, weaving them together with appropriate audio elements such as sound effects and a cohesive AI-generated narration. The duration of these summaries is tailored to each series; one example for the third season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan runs approximately three minutes.

This tool could prove especially helpful for series with lengthy intervals between seasons, offering a convenient way to get back up to speed. However, it raises the question of whether employing AI for this task is truly necessary, potentially introducing narrative inaccuracies that might confuse viewers starting a new season. While using AI to generate recaps for every season of every Prime show might make logistical sense, the current rollout covers fewer than twenty original drama series, and not even all of those. This limited scope leads some to wonder if it wouldn’t be simpler to have a person compile a recap for a series like Citadel instead.
