Finding a truly local and personalized guide to your immediate surroundings just became a reality with the launch of BeeBot, a new social app from Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley. Designed for iPhones, this innovative application functions as an AI-powered neighborhood guide that delivers location-based audio updates directly through your headphones. Crowley describes the experience as having a “personalized radio DJ” in your ear, informing you about friends’ activities, local happenings, and neighborhood news as you move through your day.

The core concept revolves around brief, engaging audio clips. “Audio updates are meant to be short and sweet (a few sentences here and there), tailored to your interests and your social graph, and designed to both inspire and inform you,” Crowley explained. He characterized the desired vibe as more “Waze meets Gossip Girl,” aiming for a fun and social feel rather than a dry, informational one.

Although the app carries the name “BeeBot for AirPods,” its compatibility extends far beyond a single brand. It works with any wired or wireless headphones, along with other Bluetooth audio devices like speakers, car stereos, and even Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses. The app is designed to be always on, activating automatically when you put your headphones in and turning off when you remove them. It intelligently lowers the volume of your music to speak and will automatically pause and unpause podcasts, though it is programmed not to interrupt during phone calls or video chats.

To ensure the experience remains helpful rather than annoying, updates are intentionally infrequent. Users can expect to hear from BeeBot just a few times each day, “but not 10x/day,” as Crowley notes, to prevent it from becoming disruptive. The information it shares is sourced from a mix of live locations and status updates from other BeeBot users. It also utilizes “keywords” you provide about your personal interests to suggest local places and events you might enjoy.

Crowley is clear that BeeBot is “still very much in beta.” The content it provides is intended to be “more gossip’y than news’y,” focusing on the social and interesting rather than hard journalism. Currently, the app offers the best user experience in walkable US cities and is less optimized for driving, cycling, or subway travel. It is initially available only for iOS users within the United States, with a CarPlay version reportedly in active development.
