CoreWeave, a major provider of cloud infrastructure for artificial intelligence training, has announced its acquisition of OpenPipe, a startup specializing in reinforcement learning tools for developing customized AI agents. The move signals a strategic expansion for CoreWeave as it continues to build out a comprehensive ecosystem for AI development and deployment.
Reinforcement learning is emerging as a pivotal force to strengthen model performance on agentic and reasoning tasks, according to Brian Venturo, co-founder of CoreWeave. He emphasized that integrating OpenPipe’s self-learning capabilities with CoreWeave’s high-performance cloud platform will offer developers a significant edge in constructing scalable intelligent systems.
Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. OpenPipe, which is based in Seattle and backed by Y Combinator, recently secured $6.7 million in seed funding. Investors in the round included Costanoa Ventures, Y Combinator, Logan Kilpatrick of Google DeepMind, GitHub co-founder Tom Preston-Werner, and Alex Graveley, co-creator of GitHub Copilot.
This acquisition represents CoreWeave’s continued effort to broaden its service offerings following its purchase of Weights & Biases earlier this year. OpenPipe is known for its open source toolkit called ART (agent reinforcement trainer), which enables organizations to build AI agents tailored to specific operational needs.
While CoreWeave counts prominent AI labs like OpenAI among its clients, the company is increasingly focused on serving smaller enterprises as well. The growing interest in reinforcement learning, a technique that improves AI performance by rewarding correct behaviors, has led many firms to seek specialized training solutions.
Such tailored training demands substantial computational power, an area where CoreWeave excels. By bringing OpenPipe into its portfolio, CoreWeave aims to both supply the necessary infrastructure and deliver end-to-end reinforcement learning services. As part of the acquisition, OpenPipe’s team will join CoreWeave, and its existing customer base will transition to CoreWeave’s platform.
