Google has introduced a significant new feature for its Gemini AI platform, allowing users to seamlessly transfer their data from competing services. Alongside the launch of Gemini 3.1 Flash Live, the company now enables the import of chats and memory from other AI applications directly into Gemini, a move that could simplify switching between assistants for many users.
To begin the process, users should navigate to the Settings & help menu in Gemini’s interface, where they will find an option labeled “Import memory to Gemini.” Selecting this redirects to a dedicated import webpage. Here, two primary functions are available. The first, import chats, accepts uploaded .zip files of exported conversation data, with a limit of 5 GB per file. Google specifically mentions compatibility with ChatatGPT and Claude, and users can upload up to five such files daily.
For those exporting from ChatGPT, the steps involve accessing Settings via the username menu, selecting Data controls, and initiating an export. Claude users follow a similar path through Settings and Privacy to request an export, which is then emailed to their account. Once uploaded to Gemini, these imported conversations appear in the standard side panel, distinctly marked with an import icon for easy identification. Users retain full control, able to search through these chats or delete them individually.
Managing bulk imports is straightforward. To remove all conversations from a specific .zip file, users can locate the import entry and select Delete. If the same exported file is uploaded again later, the system will add any new conversations while overwriting previously imported ones, ensuring the chat history remains current.
The second major feature is import memory, which operates differently. This function requires users to input a specific prompt into their other AI assistant. The prompt instructs the assistant to compile a summary of known information about the user, structured into categories like demographics, interests, and instructions, while avoiding first- and second-person pronouns. The resulting text block is then pasted into Gemini, effectively transferring contextual memory.
It is important to note that this import functionality is not currently available for users in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom. This rollout represents a strategic effort by Google to lower the barrier for users considering a switch to Gemini, providing tools to bring their existing AI interaction history with them.
