The live sports streaming market is experiencing a period of intense innovation, driven by the need to deliver more immersive experiences and unlock new revenue streams. Harmonic has announced a significant upgrade to its platform, introducing a suite of advanced features designed to meet these demands. The enhanced solution empowers broadcasters, streaming services, and rights holders to captivate audiences with interactive viewing while maximizing the value and security of their premium content.
Jean Macher, senior director of global SaaS solutions at Harmonic, emphasized the critical nature of this evolution. Live sports are the most valuable and technically demanding content in streaming. Fans now expect real-time, engaging experiences, and rights holders require robust tools for monetization. Harmonic’s latest advancements, developed through extensive collaboration across the sports industry, are engineered to provide customers with a decisive competitive advantage in a fast-moving market.
A key feature for boosting viewer interaction is the new server-side multiview solution. Developed in-house, this technology allows fans to watch several games or different camera angles on a single screen. It ensures synchronized playback with high video quality and minimal delay, works on any device, and can be deployed in a geo-redundant configuration for superior reliability. Customers can effortlessly create custom HD or UHD multiview layouts via an API or user interface.
To transform advertising opportunities, Harmonic has integrated programmatic advertising with contextual intelligence. In partnership with Viant Technology and its IRIS. TV platform, the solution automatically generates scene-level contextual data. This includes precise timestamps for game starts, ends, score changes, and pivotal moments. This metadata is then activated within Viant’s AI-powered demand-side platform, built specifically for connected TV. The result is a system where advertisers can bid on highly relevant sports inventory with greater precision and measurable outcomes. Publishers gain the ability to monetize premium, unpredictable moments like overtime in real time, maximizing revenue while serving viewers more contextually aligned ads.
Monetization is further enhanced by new dynamic in-stream advertising capabilities, already in production with a major U. S. regional sports network. Harmonic’s platform can trigger ads dynamically based on live game action, a feature successfully deployed during NBA and NHL broadcasts. This allows rights holders to capitalize on high-energy moments without disrupting the natural flow of the game. This advertising functionality can also be applied to the new server-side multiview channels, creating additional revenue streams.
Protecting valuable content is paramount, and Harmonic has strengthened its content protection with scalable, service-based forensic watermarking. Through a native integration with NAGRA NexGuard, part of NAGRAVISION’s security suite, Harmonic offers watermarking as a service. This provides real-time traceability to combat piracy with minimal impact on latency or the viewer’s experience. The company has also integrated advanced solutions from Irdeto, including TraceMark™ watermarking with both A/B and distribution-level capabilities. Together, these tools enable sports content owners to swiftly identify and shut down illegal streams, safeguarding their investments.
Harmonic will showcase its upgraded live sports streaming solution at the 2026 NAB Show in Las Vegas from April 19-22.
