Uber Eats has introduced a new beta feature called Cart Assistant, designed to streamline the grocery shopping process for its users. This AI-powered tool aims to reduce the time spent building an online cart, offering a faster and more intuitive way to shop for essentials from partnered stores.

To access the feature, customers simply search for a grocery store within the Uber Eats application. A distinctive purple Cart Assistant icon appears on the store’s page; tapping it initiates the shopping session. Users are then presented with flexible options to build their basket. They can type a straightforward list or, more conveniently, upload a photo of a handwritten list or a screenshot of a recipe. The assistant interprets the image and automatically populates the cart with the corresponding items.

Once the initial items are added, shoppers have full control to customize their order. They can swap suggested products for preferred brands or easily browse the store’s inventory to add more goods. A key aspect of the personalization is that Cart Assistant uses data from previous orders to prioritize familiar items, like a customer’s regular brand of milk or a favorite type of oatmeal, making each interaction feel tailored.

“Users were telling us they wanted a quicker way to shop, and we know how precious your time is,” stated Uber CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga. “Cart Assistant helps you get from idea to checkout in seconds.”

This move places Uber Eats squarely in competition with other delivery platforms actively exploring AI integration. For instance, Instacart launched a search tool powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2023 to provide recommendations and save time. Similarly, DoorDash was reported to be testing its own AI chatbot, DashAI, around the same period. The broader trend of AI in food delivery was evident last year when both Uber Eats and DoorDash integrated with ChatGPT to facilitate restaurant discovery and ordering.

The development of Cart Assistant aligns with earlier reports from Bloomberg in 2023, which indicated Uber Eats was working on a chatbot to guide users based on budget and food preferences. Beyond consumer-facing tools, Uber Eats is making significant investments in AI for its merchant partners. These include AI-generated menu descriptions, enhanced food photography, and summarized customer reviews, showcasing a comprehensive strategy to enhance the platform’s ecosystem through artificial intelligence.
