
When Apple launches M5-powered iPads, using iPadOS is expected to feel more akin to operating a Mac, as reported by Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman in today’s Power On newsletter. It won’t be macOS on a tablet, but the enhancements are predicted to be substantial enough to satisfy those desiring such functionality.
The upcoming updates to iPadOS this year will primarily target “productivity, multitasking, and app window management, aiming for the device to function more like a Mac,” according to Gurman. He notes these updates are anticipated “about a year” following the release of the M4 iPad Pro, a remarkable tablet with performance capabilities far exceeding the demands of its current software.
Gurman’s report does not specify what the revamped multitasking will entail, so it is prudent to temper any expectations until further details emerge. In 2022, Apple introduced Stage Manager in iPadOS 16, a feature that allows windowing and groups app windows in a dock-like collection on the side of the screen. While this might have seemed like a promising change for those looking to replace their MacBook, the implementation was too limited to serve as a meaningful step toward a full-fledged desktop operating experience.
