Google is rolling out a major update to its search ecosystem, introducing AI-powered image generation directly into AI Overviews and giving Google Images a fresh new homepage to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
Brad Kellet, Senior Engineering Director for Search, detailed the changes in a company blog post, marking a significant shift in how users interact with visual content through the search engine.
Image Generation Inside AI Overviews
The new feature allows users to generate custom images from text prompts within AI Overviews, powered by Google’s latest Nano Banana model, the same image system being expanded across Search and Chrome this year.
For instance, a search asking Google to “visualize a nautical-style room” now returns a generated bedroom image, along with follow-up questions to help refine the design further. Another example shows how users can create side-by-side comparisons, such as asking Google to generate a visual comparing two different options.
This capability will begin rolling out over the coming weeks in English, across all regions where image creation in AI Mode is already supported.
A Redesigned Google Images Homepage
Alongside the AI integration, Google is unveiling a browseable homepage for Google Images, described as a real-time gallery of images from across the web. When signed in, results are tailored to individual interests, and users can save ideas to collections that appear as tabs above the gallery.
The updated homepage, which includes personalized tabs beneath the search bar, is rolling out over the coming weeks on desktop in the U. S. in English.
Why This Matters
AI Overviews already answer many queries directly on the page without requiring a click. Adding generated images gives this surface another self-contained capability, in a space that previously directed users to web-based images.
When Google introduced visual results in AI Mode last year, a spokesperson told SEJ that its systems did not explicitly distinguish real photos from AI-generated images. That feature returned images linked to external sources.
The redesigned Images homepage adds a new starting point for discovery, offering a personalized feed for signed-in users alongside traditional query-led image search.
Looking Ahead
Both updates are being rolled out in stages, and Google has not committed to a firm launch date for either feature. The broader availability of image generation will ultimately depend on how extensively Google extends image creation within AI Mode.
