Nearly a full year after its initial announcement, Instagram has officially launched the ability for all users to rearrange their profile grid. While the feature was previously limited to select test groups, the social media platform confirmed it is now rolling out widely through the Android and iPhone mobile apps as of June 8th.
Previously, profile posts were locked in a strict chronological order, with the only exception being the option to pin three posts to the top. Now, users can simply long-press and drag any post to a new position, regardless of when it was originally shared. Any pinned posts will continue to stay fixed at the top of the grid.
The change was first teased by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri back in January of last year. At the time, he apologized to users whose carefully curated profiles had been disrupted when the app shifted from square thumbnails to taller, more vertical images. In his latest update, Mosseri simply wrote, “Finally,” though the flood of comments beneath his post suggests that many users are still waiting for other long-requested features, such as a native iPad app interface, which remains notably absent.
