Amazon has quietly rolled out a new artificial intelligence tool inside its Shopping app, allowing users to design custom merchandise simply by typing a description. The feature, announced Monday, lets anyone generate product designs through the Alexa assistant and then purchase those items through Amazon’s print-on-demand service, Merch on Demand.

This move directly challenges existing print-on-demand platforms such as Redbubble, Bonfire, Spring, and Fourthwall by embedding AI-generated design capabilities directly into a shopping experience millions already use daily. Instead of requiring graphic design skills or third-party software, customers can now describe their idea and watch the AI produce a visual concept on the spot.

Amazon suggests the tool is ideal for creating one-off items: a family reunion T-shirt, a personalized gift, or even merchandise featuring a portrait of your dog. Of course, artists whose work was used to train the underlying AI models may view this development with considerably less enthusiasm.

Once a design is finalized, Amazon handles all production, printing, and shipping. The company promises delivery through Prime shipping, making the process nearly as fast as ordering any other product from the site. The service is currently free to use , customers only pay for the physical products themselves.

For now, the feature is limited to users in the United States. To access it, open the Amazon Shopping app and tap the Alexa icon in the bottom right corner, or search the word “customize” in the search bar and select the drop-down option. From there, users describe their design idea aloud or in text, and Alexa generates an image. The design can then be refined using suggested edits or manual text changes. Finished results can be shared with friends and family, who can add the item to their own carts.

The full catalog of supported merchandise includes T-shirts, V-necks, long-sleeve shirts, polo shirts, quarter zips, jerseys, hoodies, sweatshirts, tank tops, raglans, tumblers, and water bottles. By lowering the barrier to entry, Amazon is effectively turning AI-designed merchandise into just another shopping category , one that could reshape how consumers think about personalized products.
