Crews spent weeks physically unbolting and hauling out heavy machinery, dragging thousands of tons of steel out of the building. By February, the structure was stripped down to an empty shell, ready for a complete overhaul.

Priced at an aggressive $28,000, the Fathom is an electric pickup that will debut Ford’s new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. This architecture is engineered to maximize aerodynamic efficiency while slashing production costs, a combination Ford believes will finally make its EV division profitable. The conversion from a plant that built gas-powered models like the Escape and Lincoln Corsair to a dedicated EV facility took under a year. Manufacturing methods at the new plant will look nothing like the old process. Ford is betting heavily that this streamlined workflow, combined with its long-standing expertise in high-volume manufacturing, will make the Fathom’s price point achievable. That said, the company’s track record in EVs has been rocky. Ford lost more than $5 billion on EVs and software in 2024, followed by another $4.8 billion loss in 2025. Those financial struggles ultimately led to the cancellation of the F-150 Lightning, a truck once celebrated as the most significant EV in the company’s history.
